In Memory of Dr. Shashi B. Dewan
It is with great sadness that we announce that Shashi Dewan, CEO of IE Power Inc. passed away Tuesday evening November 17, 2009.
Shashi Dewan was born in India on April 16, 1941. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1966, and later became a Professor and Professor Emeritus there.
Shashi Dewan co-authored three major books on power electronics and related applications and had over three hundred publications and thirty patents. He contributed enormously to the foundation and development of the field of power electronics. He was awarded the IEEE Newell Award for his outstanding contributions to the field of power electronics in 1977, and Killam Fellowship for full time research during 1981-1982.
In 1980, he founded Inverpower Controls in Burlington, ON, Canada and took this company public on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 1994. He was President of Digital Predictive Systems Inc. (DPS) and CEO of IE Power Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of DPS. He was also the principal founder of the Centre of Applied Power Electronics (CAPE) at the University of Toronto, Canada. He contributed and guided CAPE researchers in the development of leading edge virtual prototyping of power electronic systems for a number of industrial applications. Dr. Dewan became a Fellow of the IEEE in 1982, and served on the boards of directors of over ten public and private companies.
During his 40 years in the power electronics industry, Dr. Dewan developed new technologies used by a number of organizations to create new products. These products generated business exceeding several hundred million annual sales and created many thousands of direct and indirect permanent jobs in Canada and the United States of America.
Shashi Dewan will be greatly missed by his family, friends, associates and employees.
IE Power Inc. continues to operate with the staff you have come to know over the years with the same dedication and service you have come to expect.

September 2008
IE Power has commissioned chopper type power supplies for plasma torches and electric arc furnaces, with currents up to 6kA and voltages greater than 1800Vdc. The fast changing and wide ranging impedance of an arc load make the chopper type power supply an ideal power source when compared to traditional thyristor (SCR) type supplies. Our latest in IGBT chopper development has resulted in smaller foot prints, higher efficiency and reliability making IE Power the supplier of choice for leading plasma torch system integrators and electrode furnace manufacturers.

IE Power now has several 1MW wind turbine converters in operation for over a year. The converter acts as an “electronic gearbox” thereby reducing system maintenance and increasing system life. The converters in operation are back to back inverters that provide sinusoidal power to the grid while meeting the stringent interconnection requirements of utilities. In addition these converters are designed with proprietary technology for extreme ruggedness and long life operation in excess of 20 years.

December 2006
IE Power delivered in
September a 200kW inverter system to Xtreme
Power for a primary power system to be used
to smooth the load requirements of the South
Pole Telescope. The system has been shipped
for installation at the US National Science
Foundation’s Amundsen-Scott South Pole
Station research station in Antarctica. (http://spt.uchicago.edu)
The current South Pole station power plant
is unable to manage the high peak power
demands of the telescope. The energy storage
system will allow the telescope to run
continuously and reduce the peak power
demand needs, and will also provide close to
one hour of backup power (UPS). The combined
system will be installed in the telescope
control room and require no special
environmental controls.

200kW Load Leveling System
IE Power has delivered a
150kW Power Converter System (PCS) to
Sacré-Davey Innovations to be used in
conjunction with a stationary Nuvera
ForzaRPM PEM fuel cell. The PCS has been
independently evaluated and tested by QPS/Entela
to UL 1741 for grid parallel connection. A
full test report is on file. The
installation is to be integrated in a
combined heat and power application at North
Vancouver’s Easywash car wash. The project
installation and monitoring is managed by
Sacré-Davey Innovations, and is part of the
Integrated Waste Hydrogen Utilization
Project, a BC Hydrogen Highway member.

IE POWER Inc. recently
delivered eight 1.5-megawatt pulse power
supplies with a 120kHz switching frequency
and a 60Hz rep. rate for the Spallation
Neutron Source (SNS) at the Oak Ridge
National Laboratory. This power supply
operates with an output voltage loop
band-width of greater than 10kHz.
IE Power Inc. has
recently commissioned a 3 megawatt, high
regulation stability, dipole power supply
for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at
the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It has an
output rating of 6000A, 500Vdc.
